Biography

José Maria Pereira Monteiro, M.D. PhD, Emeritus Professor of Neurology since February 2015, Past Aggregated Professor and Head of Neurology/Neurosurgery Unit of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto.  Past Consultant of Neurology, Past Director of the Outpatient Headache Clinic and Past Manager of the Outpatient Neurologic Clinic. Founder and Chairman of the Headache Research Center (Centro de Estudos de Cefaleias) of the Department of Neurology of the Hospital Santo António, Porto, Portugal. Clinical Researcher of the Centro de Genética Preditiva e Preventiva (CGPP) of the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (I3S) of Porto University. Main research interest on epidemiology, social impact of headaches, quality of life of headache patients, headaches associated with vascular lesions, cervicogenic headaches, chronic daily headaches, neurophysiology of pain and autonomic nervous system, clinical and molecular genetics of primary headaches and treatment (drug trials 18) of migraine. Senior Consultant of Neurology and Chair of the Headache and Facial Pain Unit of the Neurociences Centre of the Hospital and Institute CUF Porto. Several publications in international (44) and national (64) scientific peer review journals and books (7), booklets (6) and book chapters (13), journal issues or supplements (15) and digital sites (2). Founder Member of the Portuguese Headache Society and European Headache Federation (EHF). Past-Member of the Executive Committee, Public Relations, Research Committees of the EHF, of the Cluster Club of the EHF and of the Ethics Committee and Public Relations Committee of the International Headache Society (IHS). Past delegate of the Portuguese Headache Society at the International Headache Society (IHS) and European Headache Federation. Co-founder and Past-President of the Portuguese Linguistic Committee of the IHS. Member of the Cervicogenic Headache International Study Group, Task Force on Chronic Daily Headache and Serotonin Club. Past-President of the Portuguese Neurological Society. Past-delegate of the Portuguese Neurological Society at the European Federation of Neurological Societies and World Federation of Neurology. Past President of the Portuguese Headache Society and Past-President of the General Assembly and of the Financial Board of Portuguese Headache Society. Past member of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Bioquímica and Sociedade Portuguesa de Neuroquímica, Effective Member of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurologia, Sociedade Portuguesa de Cefaleias, American Academy of Neurology (AAN), World Federation of Neurology (WFN), Member of the Research Groups on Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases of the AAN and on Autonomic Disorders and Headaches Sections of the WFN.
