New Learning Institute course on CSF pressure and volume disorders released

IHS members can learn everything about cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and volume disorders.

The course on CSF pressure and volume disorders is a collaboration between the IHS Education Committee and Dr Marcio Nattan Souza, University of São Paulo, Brazil.

The course comprises six modules which will take you through the most important aspects of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), such as clinical presentation, investigation, treatment, prognosis, and neuropharmacological evaluation of IIH. Each module consists of lectures delivered by world-leading experts in the pressure headache field, and is followed by a multiple-choice quiz to assess your level of understanding of the content.

Modules include

  • Clinical presentation and the first steps in the investigation; Module 1 will focus on the epidemiology, clinical presentation and complications of SIH, MRI findings and neuroimage differential diagnosis, and differential diagnoses of orthostatic headaches. Presented by Marcio Nattan Souza, Thomas Dobrocky, and Christoph Schankin
  • SIH investigation and treatment; Module 2 will discuss CSF leaks, CSF-venous fistula, and blood patch for treatment.  Presented by Timothy Amrhein, Mike Malinzak and Shuu-Jiun Wang
  • SIH advanced treatment and prognosis; Module 3 will discuss surgical treatment options, how to manage patients in a specialised centre, and prognosis and follow-up. Presented by Katharina Wolf, Anne Ducros and Jurgen Beck
  • IIH clinical presentation, diagnosis, and pathophysiology; Module 4 will focus on the epidemiology and clinical presentation of IIH, and IIH diagnostic criteria and pathophysiology. Presented by Henrik Schytz, Deborah Friedman and Rigmor Jensen
  • IIH neuropharmacological evaluation, headache in IIH and fulminant IIH; Module 5 will discuss neuro-ophthalmological evaluation for the headache specialist, headache presentation and state of the art treatment, and recognising secondary pseudotumour and fulminant IIH. Presented by Susan Mollan, Hanne Yri and Valérie Biousse
  • IIH treatment; Module 6 will discuss clinical treatment, surgical treatment, and transverse sinus stenosis and angioplasty. Presented by Sonia Quintas, Kathleen Digre and Marc Dinkin

IHS thanks Marcio for managing this course, and all the presenters who have given their time and shared their expertise on this subject.
