Professor Giuseppe Nappi, IHS Honorary Life Member, has passed away

Professor Giuseppe Nappi passed away peacefully on 7 April 2026. Professor Nappi was awarded an IHS Special Recognition Award and Honorary Life Membership in 2013 for his services to headache in Italy and worldwide.

Professor Nappi was Chair of the IHS Italian Linguistic Group from 2001-2010, a member of the Committee for the International Classification of Headache Disorders (1988 and 2004 editions) and Co-Chair of the 2023 International Headache Congress held in Rome.

He started his academic career in Pavia, where he was appointed Full Professor of Neurology in 1986. In 1998, he became Full Professor of Neurology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where he retired in 2011, but he continued in his position as scientific director of the Casimiro Mondino National Neurological Institute in Pavia until 2016. He also played a key role in founding the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches (SISC) and the European Headache Federation (EHF), of which he became President.

Outside of Italy, Professor Nappi was was a world-renowned scientist specialising in various areas of neurology, including neuroendocrinology, chronobiology and neurodegeneration, but it is in the headaches field that he truly made a difference.
