Biography

Piero Barbanti, MD, PhD, is Full Professor of Neurology at San Raffaele University in Rome and Director of the Headache and Pain Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele, Rome. He served as President of the Italian Neurological Association for Headache Research (ANIRCEF) from 2021 to 2022 and currently leads the Italian Headache Sufferers Association (AIC). He is also the founder and coordinator of the Italian Migraine Registry (I-GRAINE).

Prof. Barbanti received his medical degree with distinction from La Sapienza University of Rome, where he completed his residency in neurology and earned a PhD in neurosciences. Since the early 1990s, his clinical and research activities have been fully dedicated to headache disorders. He has authored 164 peer-reviewed publications, four books, and numerous book chapters (H-index: 39; citations: 4.676), and has served as principal investigator in 61 pharmacological clinical trials (phases IIb–IV) focusing on headache and pain.

He has lectured widely in Italy and internationally on headache pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. He is Editorial Board Member of The Journal of Headache and Pain and BMC Neurology, Section Board Member of Brain Sciences, Review Editor for Frontiers in Neurology, and serves on the Scientific Committee of The Italian Journal of Gender-Specific Medicine. He is also a reviewer for leading journals, including JAMA Neurology, The Lancet Neurology, Neurology, Cephalalgia, Headache, and The Journal of Headache and Pain.
