African Headache Network (AHEAD)
The African Headache Network (AHEAD) was established in September 2025 in Accra, Ghana.
AHEAD is a non-profit, non-governmental, and non-political scientific group.
Activities
The main objectives and ongoing activities of AHEAD include:
- Educating healthcare professionals and the public (including persons with headaches) about headache disorders, including their causes, diagnosis, and management.
- Organising and promoting educational events such as meetings, seminars, conferences, and lectures related to headache and associated fields.
- Supporting and conducting research to advance knowledge in the field of headaches.
- Advocating for fair access to headache treatments across Africa.
Society membership
Membership is open to any medical professional working in Africa (doctors, nurses, researchers, other healthcare professionals) with a special interest in headache and who expresses an interest in furthering the objectives of the network, or as otherwise expressed in the Constitution.

IHS membership
Many African countries are listed as Low, or Lower-middle income countries by WorldBank country classification and can join IHS free of charge as Associate Members. Most other African countries are listed as Upper-middle income and can join at a discounted rate; Junior* members from Upper-middle income African countries can join IHS free of charge as a Junior Associate Member.
*Junior: currently an under- or post-graduate student (including but not limited to medical students and PhD students) or a medical doctor training to become a specialist. For medical doctors, alternatively, within 3 years of obtaining a medical doctorate, an academic postgraduate degree, or specialist certification, whichever was obtained last, up to 15 years following MD qualification. For other academic groups, including Allied and other healthcare professionals, alternatively, within 6 years of obtaining the latest academic degree, up to 15 years following the primary qualification.
