International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) (3rd Edition)

The International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) is an algorithmic system to define and classify all known headache disorders. It is divided into primary headache disorders such as migraine and symptomatic headaches which are a symptom of a different disorder.

The ICHD presents classification criteria, comments and further information for headache disorders; it is revised from time to time and is now in its 3rd edition.

International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP) (1st Edition)

The first International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP) was published in 2020, and will ensure standardised communication on all aspects of orofacial pain between professions, scientists and clinicians. By acknowledging and using such a classification we make sure that scientific progress is comparable between labs and that clinicians all over the world speak about the same disease when discussing orofacial pain.

Facial pain has been included and defined in the ICHD, but the facial pain chapter in the ICHD excludes many dental and other facial disorders and is thus incomplete. With the advent of ICOP, this has changed. As such, ICHD-3 and ICOP can be cited pari passu, but given that ICOP is more specific for facial pain it should be favoured for this purpose.
