History
The Classification Standing Committee published the Classification and Diagnostic Criteria for Headache Disorders, Cranial Neuralgias and Facial Pain (now referred to as The International Classification of Headache Disorders, 1st edition) in 1988 (2).
Work began on the revision of this document in 2000. The International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edition, was first distributed at the XI International Headache Congress in Rome in September 2003, and formally published in Cephalalgia 2004 (3).
After the publication of the International Classification of Headache Disorders, second edition (ICHD-II) a number of revisions of individual chapters were prompted by new published data. In 2013 the ICHD-3-beta was published (4). The final version of ICHD-3 which was published in Cephalalgia in 2018 (5).
Work on ICD-4 was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee met in 2023 in Seoul at the 21st International Headache Congress and set out the planned method of working and reporting in Cephalalgia (6). Minutes of meetings are posted on the IHS website after Board review, and workshops are planned large headache meetings, such as held at the 22nd International Headache Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to get broad input into the work.
Translation of the ICHD-3-is welcomed by IHS Affiliate Member Societies. Please contact IHS for permission before work commences.
